C's Sign Darius Miles

The Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent forward Darius Miles to a non-guaranteed contract.

If he can stay healthy, he'll be a better fit for this team than Corey Maggette would've been. This is a low risk, high reward move by Danny. There's not a lot to dislike about this move other than maybe what this could mean for Bill Walker's future in Boston. But other than that, I love it!

Miles said he is excited for the opportunity to play with the defending champions.

“I’ve watched the Boston Celtics play a lot last year and loved what I saw in their teamwork and chemistry on the court and it’s the team that I want to try to resume my career with.” Miles said in a press release. “I am excited about having an opportunity to play on a team that I feel my personality fits with and a team that can have great success on the court.”

that would be my concern...

especially, having lived in Boston and Portland, let me assure you that Boston simply does not have enough strip clubs to keep Darius happy.

But he can be very, very good, when he’s not being very, very bad. Was not a big fan of Maurice Cheeks when he was Portland’s coach. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to Doc.

relax.

This isn’t Portland. We have a few future hall of famers named KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce who will keep him in line. In Portland, Miles was one of the vets even though he’s a young player. And in Portland, Miles was paid like a superstar. In Boston, Miles will get maybe 1 million or less. And all he has to do is find a role and stick to it. If anything, KG will bring out the best in Miles and may rejuvenate his career.

So he was “one of the vets” in Portland? I understand you want everything to go well for the Celtics all the time, but if you are posting here it means you have internet access and should be able to check on these statements.

The larger part of the problem in LA and Cleveland and Portland was that he had found a role, which was to not work very hard. Having watched Garnett’s magic for years in Minnesota, where he brought out the best in Ricky Davis, Marko Jaric, Michael Olowokandi, Eddie Griffin, Gary Trent, et al, I’m a little dubious about what he’ll do with Darius.

Oh – and he’ll be paid like a superstar in Boston, actually, exactly what Portland is paying him on this huge contract plus what Boston pays to keep him around this year.

So enjoy him! He does some fun things on the court when healthy, can even dominate games. And if he gets hurt, don’t look for him to hurry back.

I'll be following this interesting story...

Right now I’m trying to decide if Miles is actually healthy enough to contribute despite an independent doctor saying he suffered a career ending injury (seems unlikely to me) or if Ainge just wants to stick it to the Blazers.

If Miles is indeed healthy enough to contribute, more power to him.

They better have a legal release

so that if/when he blows out his knee again, he doesn’t sue them big time.

It’s really not in his best interest to play NBA ball again. He’s going to end up in a wheelchair.

I can understand why the Celtics might sign him, if he can get back to a fraction of what he was, he can fill a nice role for them. But there’s a really big risk, in my mind.

If he gets a knee replacement, in the short/medium term, he’ll still be able to walk, but nothing more, really. And in the long term, he could end up in a really bad way.

I remember Walton leaving Portland because he felt they didn’t have his best interests in mind. Are players going to want to go to Boston if Darius blows out his knee and ends up crippled? If you had a choice of teams, would you want to play for one that was willing to ignore the advice of independent doctors and put you at risk for the sake of winning a few games?

This could do a lot of damage to the Celtics’ reputation if the worst happens.

This is not like a team forcing a guy to play when he’s hurt. Miles had 2 tryouts and clearly wants another shot. If anything he’ll appreciate Boston giving him that shot.

1. I do worry about the KG/Pierce/Allen will keep “insert player’s name” in line theory. I get it to an extent. At the same time that’s a lot of work. And this list of guys who may need to be kept in line appears to be growing.

2. I like the Trail Blazers. In fact I randomly watched about 6 of their games last season, in addition to the 2 against Boston. And I get the excitement around the roster from last year with Rudy Fernandez and Greg Oden. But I do also take the “Let’s see what Oden can do over the course of a full season before we induct him into the Hall of Fame” approach. And realistically Perk would be matched up with Oden while KG guarded Aldridge. Finally say what you want about KG and Perk but they understand the NBA game.

………………………….. I don’t like the way the Blazer ownership/management group and their lapdogs in the press treated him during his injury and I hope he’s able to come all the way back to be a productive player in the NBA.

It’s bad news for the Blazers that he’s coming back, of course, they hoped he’d cash the checks and go away. He was deep-sixed for political reasons as last of the “Jail Blazers.” The man likes his bling and strip clubs, as is well documented, but that doesn’t make him a bad person or a bad teammate…

Dr. Darius was an exciting player when he was healthy and I hope he gives Boston fans good minutes and exciting times.

Deep-sixed for political reasons? Like dropping 19 consecutive N-bombs on Coach Cheeks? Sulking right after signing his absurd contract because the Blazers asked him to play off the bench for a while so they could showcase Abdur-Rahim for trade? Being such a distraction to the young players that Coach McMillan had to ask him to leave? Blowing-out his knees? Timbo, you surprise me.

Miles’ career reached its logical conclusion in Portland primarily because of his injuries, but even if he were healthy I’m glad he’s gone.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

It’s never good to drop the n-bombs in general, on the coach in particular. As a Celtic he can yell motha f#%@a whenever he wants. KG has shown that. But the rest of your list looks bad.

Good Luck Darius.

I support his desire, and hope he can do enough to fufill his basketball ambitions. I don’t think he was treated unfairly by any of his previous teams.
He has personal issues that are beyond my understanding. If he’s truely able to preform as a role player, more power to him.

I don’t think boston will be happy with this signing if he makes the roster, come all star game. but like timbo. I’ve been wrong alot, despite never being any good at it,……. being wrong that is.

"Funny how everybody was talking about weak draft and trading this pick no matter what it was, but it was still disappointing when we didn't get #1. The most telling moment was when 11 of 14 NBA executives groaned in sympathy when Portland's name was announced at the 4-spot. We can still get a good player from this position though.

And come on now, really...had we gotten the #1 selection would we have been happy or just talking about how our cursed luck continues because this is the first year that high schoolers (and thus Greg Oden) aren't allowed in the draft? Save it for next year guys...save it for next year."

But this is a fan base that believed in Rajon Rondo and was mocked for that. Tony Allen makes mistakes, is injury prone, needs confidence, and got himself in some serious trouble off the court. But he’s shown flashes. I haven’t written him off quite yet. And the funny thing is Tony Battie is expected to help out in Orlando.
